Mullingar, County Westmeath
Belvedere House was built for Robert Rochefort Lord Belfield in 1740. Mom and I spent hours exploring the beautiful grounds and admiring the flowers and trees. The ruins you see in the pictures are what remain of the Jealous Wall, erected by Robert to block the view of his younger brother George's Rochfort House, which was built in 1760 and was much larger than Belvedere House. Robert had other issues too. He locked his poor wife up in the house for 31 years under suspicion of infidelity. So, his life may have been troubled, but his estate is a haven of tranquility today.
